The Project That Gets Finished
Have you ever noticed that some projects seem to fly off your needles while others spend months (or years!) waiting patiently in a project bag?
I think every knitter and crocheter has at least one of those "someday" projects tucked away. Mine certainly aren't immune! Sometimes life gets busy, sometimes another project catches our eye, and sometimes we're just not in the mood for miles and miles of stockinette.
And you know what? That's perfectly okay.
Lately I've been reminded that there is something incredibly satisfying about choosing a project you know you can actually finish. A cozy hat, a pair of mittens, a cowl, a simple shawlette, or even a beautiful dishcloth can give you that wonderful feeling of accomplishment without requiring months of commitment.
Every finished project builds confidence.
Every finished project teaches you something new.
And every finished project reminds you why you fell in love with knitting or crochet in the first place.
But here's something else I've learned over the years: life is simply too short to spend it knitting something you don't love.
If you dread picking up a project, if the yarn isn't making you happy, if the pattern feels more like a chore than a joy, give yourself permission to set it aside. That doesn't mean you've failed—it just means your time is too valuable to spend on a project that no longer excites you.
Your knitting should bring you peace, creativity, and a sense of accomplishment. There are so many beautiful patterns and wonderful yarns waiting to become your next favorite project. Why spend your precious knitting time on something that doesn't make you smile?
Those smaller projects also become wonderful gifts to have on hand. I love the idea of keeping a little basket or drawer filled with handmade treasures throughout the year. When you need a last-minute birthday gift, a thank-you for a helpful neighbor, something special for your mail carrier, or a little surprise for someone who could use a smile, you already have something made with love.
Handmade gifts have a way of saying, "You matter."
One of my favorite things about owning the shop is seeing what everyone is working on. Someone comes in looking for yarn for a quick weekend project, and before long they're back showing off a finished hat or cowl. Those moments are contagious—they inspire the rest of us to cast on something new!
If you've been staring at a project that just isn't bringing you joy, maybe it's time to set it aside for a while. It will still be there when you're ready. Instead, choose something that makes you excited to pick up your needles every evening. Life is too short to knit something you don't love.
Knitting and crochet should be relaxing. They should make you smile. Sometimes the best project isn't the biggest or the most impressive—it's simply the one you'll enjoy making.
If you're looking for inspiration, stop by the shop! I'd love to help you find the perfect project, whether you're a beginner looking for your first success or an experienced maker wanting something fun between larger projects. We have patterns, beautiful yarns, and plenty of ideas to get you started.
And remember, if you ever get stuck or have questions along the way, you're always welcome to stop in. That's what we're here for. Sometimes all it takes is a few minutes of help to get you happily knitting again.
Happy stitching,
Betty Jo Franzen
P.S. Don't forget—I post a new blog every Wednesday! Be sure to check back next week for more knitting inspiration, tips, and a little encouragement to keep those needles moving.
