When the Weather Keeps Us Inside

There are some days when Mother Nature gently nudges us outdoors... and then there are weeks like this.

Between the heat and the smoke drifting in from the wildfires, it seems many of us are finding ourselves spending more time inside than we had planned. While it can be disappointing to cancel walks, gardening, or afternoons by the lake, I've been reminding myself that every season offers something to enjoy if we're willing to look for it.

For knitters, crocheters, spinners, and makers, this kind of weather almost feels like permission.

Permission to slow down.

Permission to settle into a comfortable chair with your favorite beverage, turn on a good audiobook or an old movie, and spend a few quiet hours creating something beautiful with your hands.

One of the things I've always loved about fiber arts is how completely they draw your attention into the present moment. Counting stitches, watching colors come together, feeling the yarn slide through your fingers—before long, you've stopped thinking quite so much about what's happening outside the window. The weather may still be hot, and the smoke may still be hanging in the air, but your mind has found a happier place to be.

I think that's one of the greatest gifts our hobbies give us. They don't make life's challenges disappear, but they do give us something positive to focus on. Every completed row is a small accomplishment. Every finished project is proof that beautiful things can come from simply showing up, one stitch at a time.

If you've been putting off that sweater, wondering when to cast on those socks, or debating whether to start that shawl you've had your eye on, maybe this is your sign. There may never be a "perfect" time—but a smoky afternoon indoors isn't a bad excuse to begin.

And if you're between projects or just need a little inspiration, stop by the shop. We'd love to help you find the perfect yarn, choose your next pattern, or simply chat about what's on your needles (or hook). Sometimes a little conversation with fellow makers is exactly what brightens a gray day.

Until the skies clear and cooler weather returns, I'll be making the best of these indoor days—with a project in my lap and another one already waiting in the wings.

After all, if we're going to be inside anyway, we might as well make something beautiful.

I hope everyone is staying safe, finding a little peace in their projects, and taking good care of themselves.

Happy knitting—and happy crocheting!

Betty Jo
