Watching the Colors Come Together

Two weeks ago, this fiber was just potential on my wheel—now it’s a finished skein I can’t stop admiring.

There’s something especially satisfying about finally finishing a yarn you’ve been thinking about for weeks—and this one was no exception.

A couple of weeks ago, I shared the roving I had started spinning, and now I’m excited to say it’s officially finished yarn! I decided to try chain plying this time, hoping it would help the colors blend more smoothly. I’m so glad I gave it a shot, because the results turned out even better than I expected.

The colors softened into each other in a really beautiful way, and I ended up with some lovely barber poling throughout the yarn. It adds so much character and movement—definitely one of my favorite parts of how it turned out.

This skein came out as a chunky weight yarn, which is partly due to the chain plying but also, if I’m being honest, because I still tend to spin thicker than I intend to. It’s something I’m actively working on, and I know that with more practice I’ll get closer to the consistency and thinness I’m aiming for.

From 4 ounces of roving, I ended up with about 107 yards. Not a huge amount, but enough to create something special. I haven’t decided what it will become yet, but that’s part of the fun—letting the yarn tell me what it wants to be.

Chain plying is still new territory for me, and this yarn is far from perfect. But I’m genuinely happy with how it turned out, and even more excited to keep improving. Every project teaches me something new, and this one definitely built my confidence.

And really… if the solution is more spinning, I guess I’ll just have to keep practicing—what a problem to have!
